Benefits of a Lawn Roller

It does not take a trained eye to spot many of the problems that can occur with a lawn. When you see brown spots popping up across a lawn, you know that there is something wrong with either your watering methods or the nutrients in the soil. These are common problems that occur frequently even for those who are experienced in lawn care. However, there are other more obscure problems that can be confusing and difficult to manage. When you have uneven areas on your lawn, whether they have been there for ages or have just appeared, a special tool is needed to remedy the problem.

Uneven areas of a lawn are best fixed with a tool called a garden roller. This is a specialty tool that you don't see in many people's collection of yard tools. This tool uses a heavy roller drum to flatten out bumps in a yard. Yard rollers are efficient in what they do because they are quite heavy, flattening the ground in just a few passes. Simply stomping on the ground with your feet doesn't work because your body weight is not enough to flatten the ground. A roller has a wide surface area which is flat and smooth, resulting in a professional and refined look.

The push rollers have a handle which users can hold while rolling the tool around. If there are bumpy areas on your lawn, these can often be flattened if the ground is not compacted. If it is compacted, you will need to shovel out the bulk of the mound before rolling over it. The ground must then be re-seeded. For bare lawns that do not have grass on them, seeds can be rolled into the ground with these rollers. This presses the seeds into the ground where they will be safe from birds and receive the nutrients they need.

Since these drums can be quite heavy, not everyone will be capable of pushing them around. If you need a larger roller or simply don't want to push it around, there are versions that can attach to small tractors. The drum must be filled with water or sand before using to make it heavy. When not filled, the roller becomes light enough to manage and even hang on a hook in the garage. The wider the drum, the less passes you will need to make to cover the problem area.
