Racing Lawnmower Sanctioning Bodies

The sport of lawn mower racing keeps on getting more and more popular.  There are now a number of sanctioning bodies to be found around the U.S. and in other nations all over the globe.  This article is an outline of a few of the more well-known associations.

The original and number one on the list is the BLMRA, the British Lawn Mower Racing Association.  This is the first group, the group that started it all in 1973.  The group was established in Wisborough Green, West Sussex, England.  This organization is credited with the development of the racing lawnmower.

The organization that claims to be the first to bring the racing lawnmower to the United States is the USLMRA, the United States Lawn Mower Racing Association in 1992.  This professional association gets nationwide notice.

Headquartered in Glenview IL, the USLMRA boasts twenty local chapters in twenty states around the country.  The states that have chapters consist of AR, AZ, FL, GA, IL, IN, IA, LA, ME, MD, MI, MN, CT, ND, OH, PA, SD, TN, TX, and WI. Soon they will have representatives in all fifty states.

In addition to the nation associations, there are regional sanctioning bodies.  Some are associated with the major national organizations.

NASGRASS, the North American Society of Grass Racers and Sod Slingers, makes its home in Naples, Florida.  As a member of USLMRA, they choose to abide by comparable policies.  NASGRASS roared to life in 1985. Two neighbors decided to find out who could cut his grass faster.  The challenge was speedily resolved with a drag race.  This sounds like the birth of the drag racing lawnmower.

The NDLMRA, North Dakota Lawn Mower Racing Association, started in 1999.  They mostly race at local fairs and for entertainment at charity events.  This association keeps fun at the forefront for their races.

The RCLMRA, also famous as the Mow-Fast Racing Association, operates in Kansas.  They use a unique starting procedure for their races.  The "Lemans Style" procedure requires that each racing lawnmower lines up at the starting line and the drivers stand in a row.  When the race starts, the drivers must run to their mower, get it going and take off. Talk about adding excitement to the race.

Lawnmower racing is popular outside the US and Britain. The AROLMRA, the Australian Ride On Lawn Mower Racing Association has more than 70 members and as many as 37 racing lawn mowers take part in each event.

SOLTRA, the Southern Ontario Lawn Tractor Racing Association, doesn't wait for the snow to melt to put on a show. This organization performs in huge indoor venues such as the Sky-Dome in Toronto and Copps Coliseum in Hamilton, Ontario. They were even filmed for a big Hollywood movie called "The Prince & Me."

Watch for more organizations to appear as the sport of lawnmower racing goes on to expand in popularity and take over the globe.  Check the schedule for your local county fair or racetrack and don't be shocked to see a lawnmower racing event scheduled.  Don't be surprised if you find your own John Deere on the track someday.
